10 tips for working from home during the COVID-19 era

10 tips for working from home during the COVID-19 era

By Tessa Micucci and Amanda Di Placido

COVID-19 took the world by storm, upending our lives and work in a dramatic way. Given the “working from home” era is only just beginning, here are ten tips to get you through lockdown 2.0 and beyond.

1.Set up regular virtual check-ins with colleagues

While we all miss chatting to our colleagues, including perhaps their perspectives on how to deal with matters, be conscious of what you say to members of your family, friends or housemates about work. Set up regular virtual check-ins with your colleagues to minimise that #isofeeling.

2.Create separate workspaces

Where possible, set up a separate workspace away from other members of your household. Take work calls in a private room if you can, or reschedule the call for a later time in the day when no-one in your household is present.

3.Check privacy settings on mobile

Check your mobile device settings to ensure privacy and security functions are enabled as appropriate. You may also want to prevent your caller ID from being displayed when making outgoing calls to clients.

4.Only use approved third party communication platforms

Only use workplace approved third party collaboration and communication platforms for work-related communication. This includes things like Messenger, video chat, email accounts and online communication boards. If your workplace has not approved any third-party platforms, be cautious when selecting which applications to use.

5.Be wary of phishing scams

Remain mindful when clicking on links and accessing digital content when working from home. If you receive a suspicious email, contact your workplace’s IT team.

6.Be careful of what you post to social media

While we all love an #isoupdate, be careful of what you post to social media. Check your privacy and security settings. If you take pictures or videos while working remotely, make sure you don’t inadvertently capture work information or devices in the background.

7.Avoid working in public places

Given the importance of client confidentiality and privacy, avoid working in public places and set up a private workspace where possible.

8.Avoid using public or unprotected WiFi networks

Consider using a secured WiFi network or ethernet. If you are using your home WiFi, make sure that the connection is secure by checking that your router has a password and make sure that your devices have run any firmware or software updates.

9.Take a break and stay active

During this unprecedented era, it is more important than ever to take regular breaks and keep up the exercise.

10.Reach out to friends, family or professionals for help

If you are struggling, please make sure you reach out to friends, family or professionals for help. You are not alone, and we will get through this together.

We would love to hear from you about your experiences. What are some tips you would like to share when it comes to working from home during lockdown?
