The Technology and Law Committee was originally established by the LIV Council as a Committee of Council in October 2014. In February 2020, it transitioned into an LIV Section under the LIV Legal Policy Department.

The objectives of the Section are to:

  • monitor and advise the LIV on issues and opportunities relating to the intersection of technology, innovation and the law;
  • promote greater uptake and understanding of technology in legal practice, including the risks and benefits of technology use and adoption;
  • assist with drafting comments for inclusion in LIV responses to draft legislation, reform initiatives, policy proposals, guidelines or discussion papers within areas of law relevant to the Committee;
  • monitor and advise on developments in case law, legislation and public policy that are impacted by technology;
  • promote awareness, knowledge and uptake of technology in the legal profession; and improve the engagement and understanding of, and between, the legal and technology industries/communities; and
  •  the Committee may also do other work to develop a long-term approach to technology in the legal profession
