LIV seeks that Sex Discrimination Act Amendment Bill not proceed

LIV seeks that Sex Discrimination Act Amendment Bill not proceed

By LIV Diversity Committee

Diversity Human Rights Women's Rights Workplace Relations

The LIV has expressed its concerns regarding MP Zali Steggall's proposed Sex Discrimination Amendment Bill.

The LIV strongly supports amendments to the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) in light of the Respect@Work report released in 2020. However, LIV members have expressed concern that the proposal to make sexual harassment "illegal in all circumstances" as provided in the Sex Discrimination Amendment (Prohibiting All Sexual Harassment) Bill 2021 goes beyond the workplace-focused recommendations of the Respect@Work report.

The LIV recommends that the Bill should not proceed based on its overly broad scope and submits that the core element of prohibiting sexual harassment in workplaces is sufficiently addressed by the Government's recent proposal to implement the 55 recommendaitons of the Respect@Work report.
