Communication Opinions Workplace

Are you up to the Challenge? In the past WADR has lamented the decline in things we once took for granted, such as grammar, public civility and kicking for goal. To the point where the jibe “you are starting to sound like your father” is now frighteningly appropriate. Your correspondent could be a victim of declinism, the view that the world was better in the past and that almost everything in the future is going to be worse. It used to be called “being a grouch” but it’s nice to have a fancy word for it. Social media and the rise of the smart phone generation are easy targets if we are looking for something to blame for a general decline in human behaviour and dumbing down of public discourse. I’m not sure we can blame them for a decline in kicking for goal skills. Since it’s always fun to find something new to moan about, your correspondent wonders if modern communication methods are linked to something else that has almost disappeared within a generation: oratory skills and the art of speech-making.
