LIV Financial Assistance Policy

As a member of the LIV paying membership fees, there are a range of circumstances under which you may be eligible for financial assistance from the LIV. These reasons may include:

  • Unemployment
  • Family care responsibilities
  • Working part time and/or on significantly reduced hours
  • Other circumstances that may impact your ability to work or earn an income.

Financial assistance may be granted by the LIV in the following ways:

  • Members will be able to pay their 2020/21 membership fees in quarterly installments
  • In exceptional circumstances, a discounted membership fee may be considered at the discretion of the LIV.

To apply for financial assistance due to financial hardship, please complete the LIV Financial Assistance Application Form prior to payment of your annual membership fee.

Financial assistance is granted at the discretion of the Law Institute of Victoria and expires at the end of the membership year.

The information supplied by you will help us to understand your individual circumstances and their impact on your ability to fund your membership renewal for the coming year. Financial assistance is granted based on the evidence provided and evaluation of both your recent past and current working circumstances, and not granted based on an expected impact in the future.

Your application will require you to provide information about:

  • Background, dates and reasons for any period that you have been away from the workforce in the past 12 months
  • Details of any employment during the past 12 months, including the number of hours (for example hours per week on average) and the type of work (part-time, casual, contract, etc.)
  • Any other information or supporting documentation that would assist the Law Institute of Victoria in reaching a decision (For example, a medical certificate).

To ensure a fair and informed assessment on all applications, we may ask you to provide additional information and/or supporting documents regarding your application.

Members who are successful in their application for financial assistance retain all the privileges of their existing membership category.

Members impacted by 2019/20 Bushfires

Members located in bushfire affected areas that took place in the December 2019 - January 2020 period may also apply for financial assistance for the 2020/21 membership year.

Eligible members can complete the Financial Assistance Application Form prior to payment of your annual membership fee.

Eligibility criteria includes:

  • The postcode of residential address or business address located in bushfire affected areas in Victoria as listed on the ATO website.

Parental Leave

Members can apply for a period of 12 months leave from LIV membership. Members will be transferred to an “on-leave” category type where membership fees will be waived for the following membership year based on the date application is made to the LIV.

The “on-leave” category type will allow the member to maintain Affiliate member benefits of the LIV.
